Men at Work

A collection I seem to have been making for the last few years without really realising I was making it. The men who build, clean, repair, deliver and generally keep the places around us moving, usually while the rest of us just walk past.

A man in a bright orange hi-vis jacket on the phone, standing against an old stone church wall. A surveyor with a yellow tripod taking measurements outside a scaffolded old building.

The Reader

For a year I walked past the same bench in Oxford. Most afternoons, around four o'clock, he'd be there. Always reading. Eventually I realised I wasn't photographing a stranger. I was photographing time.

A man in a red shirt reading a book on a bench beside railings, with Christ Church's Tom Tower in the background.
A man with a bicycle leaning against railings, holding up a book and looking directly at the camera. A man reading in soft golden light on the same bench, a different season.

Street

Black and white frames from Oxford's streets — mostly on foot, mostly by instinct. Light, shadow, and the moments that happen when nobody's looking.

Black and white photo of a cyclist silhouetted against morning light on a wide street beside a stone wall, with a clock tower in the distance.
Black and white street scene outside Browns restaurant, with two people talking on the pavement and long morning shadows. Black and white Oxford street scene. Black and white Oxford street scene.
